What’s Driving the Rise in Cardiometabolic Risk?

While genetic susceptibility is essential in developing CMS, the syndrome is relatively uncommon in consumers who are within normal weight and moderately active – making weight loss and increased physical activity the first line of defence in managing metabolic disturbances.

But there are other factors at play too. Research shows that the environment we live in can contribute to CMS risk with an article in the health journal Circulation noting that urban environments contribute significantly to the rising burden of cardiometabolic diseases. This is primarily due to air and noise pollution, chemical exposure, physical inactivity, and a lack of green spaces. Other research still is focused on the effects of chronic insomnia on the metabolic system.

A study in the scientific journal nature found that that chronic insomnia is associated with a higher risk of CMS. The study investigated the impact of the gut microbiota-bile axis and highlighted the positive association that exists between chronic insomnia and CMS. The study also pointed to a direct link between physiological responses to stress that could result in internal dysregulation and increased cardiometabolic risk. Education seems to play a significant part too. A study conducted with 8, 449 subjects from the Czech Republic, i as the strongest determinant of cardiovascular mortality, followed by hypertension and smoking. But what does this tell us about other geographies?

 

Mapping the geography of CMS

Research shows that countries with the highest rates of CMS are situated in the Middle East, North America, and Asia. In Saudi Arabia, a cross-sectional study reported a cardiometabolic syndrome prevalence of 39.8% using medical guidelines, with high rates of obesity and diabetes, coupled with urbanisation were the biggest risk factors.

In the US, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is reported at 34.3% with high obesity rates, sedentary lifestyles, and diets rich in processed foods contributing factors. Meanwhile, China, where instances of CMS have historically been low, is now seeing rates of 21.3%, , primarily due to rapid economic development, and the shift towards Western diets and an inactive lifestyle.

 

 

How the Market Is Evolving Toward Natural Cardiovascular Solutions

With advances in wearable technology and the democratisation of at-home biomarker testing, consumers now have the power to change their health for the better. In this space, we will continue to see informed consumers concerned about their health investing in natural alternatives and preventatives as opposed to traditional treatments, which is contributing to the boom in the cardiovascular supplements market.

Valued at $12 billion in 2024, sales of cardiovascular supplements are on track to hit $18.76 billion by 2032, growing at a steady 6.1% CAGR.
